Shakespeare II: Shrew Posts

Post V & VI

Prompts for 3/11 through 3/23 (you must post on one of these topics by 3/16 and reply by 3/21 and post on the other by 3/23).

A.  Choose a quotation from or about any of the characters that reveals something significant about him or her. Reproduce the quote (all of it if it’s a line or two– the essential parts if longer) and provide its page and line numbers. Then explain the significance of that quotation. Try to refer back to key words from the quotation. Once a quote has been used, it cannot be used again. Remember your comment should be a solid paragraph.

B.  Is The Taming of the Shrew a sexist play and is there any room for it among contemporary audiences? As always ground your discussion with evidence from the text. Your posts should be at least a solid paragraph in length. Your replies may be more brief (2-3 sentences) but should be significant (not just “I agree with Snookie.” but “I agree with Snookie because … and furthermore on page …”).

Post I

Contrast the expectations that parents have of their children in the world of the play with the way the children actually behave. What truly characterizes a loyal child?

Here is a primary source on expectations of children that you might want to consult, but it is more important that you ground your discussion in Lear.
