About

I am a teacher.

After 16 years of teaching science, I have reached the conclusion that I am a teacher, forever and always. I was once a suburban kid who taught the neighborhood how to cartwheel and ride a bike. Now, I am a high school science teacher and I accept my destiny. Being a teacher fits me, because education is never static and neither am I.

Currently, I teach physical science and biology in an integrated, looping freshman-sophomore program along with an English and social studies teacher, a reading specialist, and a special educator. I also teach first year chemistry, Advanced Placement Chemistry, and various other classes as needed. I began teaching when the World Wide Web was in its infancy and saw it mature into a force of nature. The changes wrought by instant access to infinite information have had a profound impact on the students that I teach. They have evolved, but so have I. I seek to better reach and prepare my students for the 21st century. I seek to find relevant connections among the disciplines in the integrated program in which I participate. I play music and connect to the visual arts in my personal and professional life. I also enjoy kayaking, skiing, and many other outdoor activities.

According to Malcolm Gladwell author of the ‘Tipping Point,’ it takes ten thousand hours of practice to master any discipline whether playing professional hockey or performing as a professional musician. Of all my interests, I believe I may be closest to ten thousand hours of teaching and I hope to be a master teacher some day. I recognize that there is no certification, license, or award for this, but the reward is significant to me. I will have the confidence of knowing that have adapted to do more than survive in the modern classroom; I can impact it as well.

This year I am teaching IC Biology during blocks A-D in room 211, Accelerated Chemistry during Block E in room 218, and AP Chemistry during block H in room 218. My planning block is block F and my IC planning time is during block G.
